If there is one complaint I hear time and time again it’s that people don’t have enough time. Today on BLL we’re doing something a little different. We’re going to talk about how to make time to actually get things done.
In our business we use time blocking to accomplish our goals. There are 168 hours in a week. That’s it. Sleep take up a big chunk of that leaving you with about 112 hours every week. This is where time blocking comes in. It’s a simple concept. Simply create a spreadsheet that blocks out every hour of every day. Here is a sample that we produced for you.
Writing down every task you do and how long it takes you sounds tedious. But it will reveal how you are using your time. And most importantly it will show you where you’re wasting your time. Align your tasks to your goals. During the day we tend to get distracted and effective work gets lost. Make sure you’re being practical about the things you want to achieve.
Everyone has something called golden time. It’s called other names but the concept remains the same. It refers to the time of day when you are most effective. It’s usually no longer than 8 hours and can be anytime of the day. Everyone is different. For some it’s the mornings for others the middle of the night. The key is to understand when you’re golden hours are and to use that time effectively.
Distractions are the biggest enemy of effective work. We live in an era of peak distraction. Your mobile phone is likely ringing with notifications constantly. There’s a simple way to combat this problem. Turn your notifications off! If you’re in deep concentration and you get distracted it can take hours to get back on track. Pull your work onto yourself. Don’t have it pushed onto you.
A practical example
If you look at the time blocking spreadsheet we provided there are some things you’ll notice right away. We’ve divided the day into half-hour blocks. To see how I like to use those blocks watch the video we’ve created here.
More about this Show
We started Business Legal Lifecycle to create a simple way for you to understand complex legal terms. Most importantly we want to help you to develop a plan to take your business successfully into the future. There’s a startling statistic the underscores the importance of developing a solid plan. The majority of business owners are just seven months away from losing everything. A single aspect of your business that is not set-up correctly can shut down your whole operation very quickly. Legal advice is not cheap and even when you can afford it there is often a divide between lawyers and their clients. We want to close that gap once and for all. We want to put legal knowledge and tools into your hand to prevent the worst from happening to you.
Twice a week we are going to deliver those tools right to your home or office with Business Legal Lifecycle TV. We’ll start the week with Fast Fix Monday, a short 5-10 minute video that will tackle a single issue that businesses have to deal with. Then on Wednesday’s our main show will feature with more fulsome discussions and interviews all delivered in a straightforward and easy to understand format.
