In Show 163 originally broadcast on Facebook Live on Dec 26, 2018 we explore this interesting topic.
The Business Legal Lifecycle has gone global! We recently released a revised edition of the book for the UK. We partnered with London attorney Nigel Clark for the new edition of the book. Nigel works with the hugely successful firm Peregrine Law and has been accepted to the bar in the UK and Australia. Nigel has focussed his practice on high-quality corporate advice to the UK and overseas clients. He looks at Peregrine as a new style of law firm with a different way of working. We wanted to invite him onto the show to talk about how the law is changing and what businesses need to know.
There is much that the UK and Australia share. A common history, obviously. But also a common law. That shared legal history means there aren’t that many differences between the two countries. But a century of independence means that some differences have arisen.
The biggest legal challenge facing businesses in the UK right now is Brexit. That is happening in March of 2019 though it could still be stopped. There is an amazing amount political turmoil being caused by the debate surrounding Brexit. What is really interesting is that there isn’t any law yet around Brexit. Everyone is just guessing.
Nigel says the thing that really excites him is working across borders. Because of that he’s always thinking about what opportunities there are out there for international work. Society is appreciating more and more that businesses are run by actual people. That means you need to understand the people before you can succeed in a new market. Whether you’re selling ice cream or legal services you need to know the people. Start with culture and language. Those are the most important things you need to understand. And especially understand the differences between your cultures. Otherwise you can get into trouble very quickly.
That’s what sets Peregrine Law apart from their competitors. They are small but they are also global. That allows them to offer a different standard of service for much smaller clients. He’s building out his back office infrastructure in order to employ lawyers all over the world. Using technology to connect to clients is the future.

More about this Show
We started Business Legal Lifecycle to create a simple way for you to understand complex legal terms. Most importantly we want to help you to develop a plan to take your business successfully into the future. There’s a startling statistic the underscores the importance of developing a solid plan. The majority of business owners are just seven months away from losing everything. A single aspect of your business that is not set-up correctly can shut down your whole operation very quickly. Legal advice is not cheap and even when you can afford it there is often a divide between lawyers and their clients. We want to close that gap once and for all. We want to put legal knowledge and tools into your hand to prevent the worst from happening to you.
Twice a week we are going to deliver those tools right to your home or office with Business Legal Lifecycle TV. We’ll start the week with Fast Fix Monday, a short 5-10 minute video that will tackle a single issue that businesses have to deal with. Then on Wednesday’s our main show will feature with more fulsome discussions and interviews all delivered in a straightforward and easy to understand format.
