Protecting your intellectual property is really important to the future success of your company. But it’s not always easy to understand what IP is and how to safeguard it. Copyright is one of the biggest things new businesses misunderstand. Not only do you have to protect your own creative works you need to ensure you are not infringing on someone else’s rights. There are three things business owners tend to get wrong:
1. Changing something doesn’t change the copyright
I often hear people say that changing 10% of an image or a paragraph negates the copyright. That isn’t the case at all. Copyright protects against identical copies but also against copying any part of that work.
2. Registering a copyright
You don’t have to register a copyright. It automatically exists as soon as you create the work. There are some examples where that isn’t the case such as creating a work for an employer.
3. A copyright notice isn’t necessary
Don’t assume that copyright doesn’t exist on a work just because it doesn’t contain the © symbol. It exists automatically. It is a good idea to include the © symbol on any work you produce but it isn’t necessary
