Getting more people to see your content is the holy grail of online marketing. Everyone says they know how to do it but very few can actually follow through. Today’s guest Adam Houlahan is one of the few that can. Adam is the creator of the Web Traffic That Works Program. He is also the author of The LinkedIn Playbook about generating high quality leads online. We’ve known Adam for many years and can attest to his expertise in online marketing.
LinkedIn has a number of levels of power, in Adam’s opinion. But it’s not great as a sales tool. One of the biggest mistakes people make in LinkedIn is after making a connection they immediately try to sell them something. Everyone hates that. What LinkedIn is really good at is getting to the decision makers really quickly. You can bypass the gatekeepers really easily. You can easily position yourself in the top 0.02% of LinkedIn users if you follow a very simple framework.
The biggest mistakes you can make on LinkedIn, according to Adam are:
Spamming people with offers
Adam calls people who do this “leg-humpers”. You don’t ask someone to marry you on the first date. It’s all about positioning yourself with authority. People with authority don’t spam people.
A lot of people manage their social media content with platforms like HootSuite to share you content across multiple platforms. LinkedIn wants you to link to content hosted inside LinkedIn. If you share that kind of content for a long time you basically get into LinkedIn jail called “content suspension”.
You have to share the right kind of content. That content should be:
Native means you upload the video directly to the LinkedIn platform. The videos should be between 1-3 minutes with 2 minutes being the sweet spot. 85% of videos are watched without sound so you do need captioning.
Short status posts
The LinkedIn algorithm has lately started to favour shorter status updates. Until recently they preferred longer articles but that has now changed. 1300 character articles are the gold standard right now now LinkedIn. Also include an image!
Adam produces 13 pieces of content a month. That’s a lot to strive for but try and get to at least one post a week.
You should also change your profile. There are some very easy things you can do to make the most of this space. Choose a big striking background image. You’re missing a massive opportunity to position yourself if you use. Also, make sure your professional headline is correct Think of that section in terms of keywords. What search results do you want to turn up on? Be sure to include a well written entry in the summary section. Connect
