What should you say to a lawyer?

You have that meeting with your lawyer coming up. You aren’t sure what it is that you will need to say. You don’t know what they will ask you. Depending on why you are going to see a lawyer you need to be aware of what you need to tell your lawyer. This article is relating to business law and not criminal law. If you have this question in relation to a criminal or you are not sure you should take advice from your lawyer.

Understanding the legal aspects of your business is crucial for your success. All too often we see business owners spend thousands, tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to solve a legal problem in their business. Often this occurs because you don’t tell your lawyer everything.

Tell your lawyer everything

All too often when people see a lawyer they try to tell them what they think the lawyer needs to hear. This is a terrible approach as a lawyer can’t help you if they don’t know the full situation. Essentially you need to tell your lawyer your complete situation including what your goals are and what you would like to happen with your business.

When you go to a lawyer they will generally ask you a lot of questions about your situation. Make sure that if you believe that something has been missed that is important that you raise it in the meeting (or tell them later). To do that properly you need to educate yourself on different legal aspects of your business, what they mean and how they might apply to you.

What not to say to a lawyer

You should tell your lawyer everything that you know about your situation so that they can give you proper advice. Some things that you shouldn’t say to your lawyer are, I know that, I know the answer, I know what needs to happen. Ultimately you are there to get their advice, you can tell them what you think needs to happen but you need to take their advice.

Also you shouldn’t tell them that you aren’t going to tell the lawyer everything. This is a terrible idea, the lawyer will not be able to advise you on your situation if you don’t give them all of the information.
